What Is Residential Assisted Living—and Why Is It a Better Choice?

Residential Assisted Living is a new standard of care that feels less like a facility—and more like home. Unlike the crowded, impersonal nature of large “big-box” senior living facilities, residential assisted living offers an intimate, warm, and nurturing environment where your loved one is more than just a number—they’re family.

At Audubon Care Homes in Metairie, we believe that personalized care thrives in smaller, more comfortable settings. Our homes provide a true sense of community, with beautifully furnished spaces that feel like a real home—not a hospital or institution. What truly sets us apart is our exceptional caregiver-to-resident ratio, the highest you’ll find anywhere in the country. This means more attention, quicker responses, and deeper connections with caregivers who genuinely get to know your loved one’s needs, preferences, and personality.

Why is this better than staying at home? While aging at home may seem ideal, it can often lead to isolation, safety concerns, and inconsistent care. Our homes provide 24/7 support, companionship, and a sense of belonging—all in a setting designed to offer peace of mind for both residents and their families.

Why choose us over a big-box facility? Large facilities often feel overwhelming, and residents can get lost in the crowd. At Audubon Care Homes, your loved one will never feel forgotten. They’ll receive personalized attention, compassionate care, and enjoy meaningful connections with both staff and fellow residents—all in a cozy, home-like setting.

When you choose Audubon Care Homes, you’re not just finding a place for your loved one to live—you’re finding a home where they can thrive, feel valued, and be cared for with dignity and love.

Is there a shortage of high-quality assisted living and memory care beds in New Orleans?

Yes—and it’s worse than most people realize. The demand for high-quality assisted living and memory care far outweighs the supply, leaving families scrambling for options when a crisis happens. Many assume they’ll have time to “shop around” or wait until the need is urgent, only to find that the best places are full and the only available options are subpar facilities that provide little more than basic supervision.

The reality is that not all assisted living homes are the same. Many facilities stretch their staff too thin, hire undertrained caregivers, or simply do the bare minimum to keep their doors open. Families who wait too long often find themselves forced into choosing a place that is “good enough” rather than one that provides true quality care, safety, and dignity.

At Audubon Care Homes, we provide a level of care that most facilities can’t or won’t match. Our homes are small, intimate, and fully staffed with only Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), ensuring that your loved one receives expert care from trained professionals—not just someone hired off the street with no experience. And because we offer the highest caregiver pay in the city, we attract and retain the best caregivers, giving your loved one stability and consistent care from people who truly know them.

Don’t wait until it’s too late. Quality assisted living and memory care beds are extremely limited, and families who delay are often left with heartbreaking choices. If you want the best care for your loved one, the time to act is now. Call us today to discuss availability and schedule a tour—because waiting could mean settling for less than they deserve.

How fast do your beds fill up?

Fast. The demand for high-quality assisted living and memory care in New Orleans is at an all-time high, and the reality is that the best places fill up quickly. Families who wait too long often find themselves scrambling for an available bed—only to realize that the only options left are large, understaffed facilities or places that offer little more than basic supervision. In January of 2025. we opened up a new 16 resident home on Seminole Avenue in Bucktown. Once these beds fill up, they rarely open up. The average length of stay of a resident in our homes is nearly 24 months - a testamant to the exceptional care we provide.

At Audubon Care Homes, we intentionally keep our homes small and intimate, providing the highest level of care with a 1:3 caregiver-to-resident ratio on most days and only hiring Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). Because of this, our homes have very limited availability, and once our beds are full, they stay full. Many families who inquire too late end up on a waiting list while their loved one remains in an unsafe or unsuitable situation.

If you're considering assisted living or memory care for a loved one, now is the time to act. Waiting too long could mean missing out on a high-quality, secure, and compassionate environment. Call us today to check availability—because the best care is never available for long.

What happens if I wait too long to move my loved one?

Waiting too long is one of the biggest mistakes families make. Many people believe they’ll “know when the time is right,” but the truth is that most families wait until a crisis forces them to act—when it’s already too late to make the best choice.

Read more about our simple move-in process on our How It Works page.

Here’s what often happens:

  • A fall, hospitalization, or sudden decline leaves families scrambling to find a care home within days.
  • The best homes are full, leaving only subpar facilities or understaffed large communities with long waitlists.
  • Rushed decisions lead to regret—many families place their loved one in a facility they wouldn’t have chosen under normal circumstances.

The harsh reality is that quality assisted living and memory care beds are extremely limited. If you wait too long, you may be forced into a decision you never wanted to make.

At Audubon Care Homes, we provide the highest standard of care with a 1:3 caregiver-to-resident ratio on most days and only hire CNAs—but our homes are small, and availability is limited. Families who plan ahead secure the best care in a stress-free, proactive way rather than making a rushed, last-minute choice they later regret.

Don’t wait for a crisis. Call us today to discuss availability—because waiting could mean settling for less than your loved one deserves.

Do most of your residents come from other small care homes or big-box facilities?

Yes! Nearly 85% of our residents move to Audubon Care Homes from other small care homes or big-box facilities. Families often come to us after experiencing poor care elsewhere—overcrowded facilities with terrible caregiver-to-resident ratios, minimal engagement beyond watching TV, and low-quality food. We take pride in being the highest-rated assisted living and memory care provider in the New Orleans area. Our commitment to exceptional care, personalized attention, engaging activities, and high-quality meals makes all the difference. Families who want the best care for their loved ones choose Audubon Care Homes.

How do I know if my loved one is ready for assisted living?

Deciding whether it’s time for assisted living is one of the hardest choices a family can face. It’s natural to want to keep your loved one at home for as long as possible—it feels familiar, comfortable, and safe. But the truth is, as needs change and health challenges grow, staying at home can quickly become unsafe and unsustainable.

Here’s the reality: home isn’t always the safest place for aging adults. Even with the best intentions, most families simply can’t provide the level of care, attention, and supervision their loved one needs—especially as those needs become more complex. At Audubon Care Homes, we’re here to provide the support and peace of mind that home can no longer guarantee.

Signs it may be time for assisted living:

  • Increased Risk of Falls: Have there been recent falls or near-misses? Homes often aren’t designed with safety in mind for seniors, and one fall can have life-altering consequences.
  • Difficulty Managing Daily Activities: Is your loved one struggling with basic tasks like bathing, dressing, cooking, or keeping up with household chores?
  • Medication Management Issues: Are medications being missed, taken incorrectly, or forgotten altogether? At home, it’s easy for something so critical to slip through the cracks.
  • Isolation and Loneliness: Staying at home can lead to social isolation, which is linked to depression, cognitive decline, and other health issues.
  • Declining Physical or Cognitive Health: Are memory issues becoming more noticeable? Are there signs of confusion, forgetfulness, or difficulty with mobility?

Why staying home isn’t always the safest choice:
While aging at home might feel comfortable, it can also mean living without proper supervision, medical support, or social interaction. This can lead to increased risk of falls, malnutrition, medication mistakes, and worsening health issues—things that can go unnoticed until it’s too late.

At Audubon Care Homes, we offer a solution that not only keeps your loved one safe but also helps them thrive. Our highly trained caregivers are available 24/7, ensuring that help is always there when it’s needed. With personalized care plans, daily engagement, nutritious meals, and a warm, home-like setting, we provide the kind of support that simply isn’t possible at home.

If you’re starting to question whether your loved one is truly safe at home, it’s time to consider assisted living. You don’t have to wait for a crisis to make the right decision—choosing Audubon Care Homes means providing your loved one with the care, safety, and community they deserve, before small concerns turn into serious emergencies.

Why is it better for my loved one to move into Audubon Care Homes instead of staying at home or moving in with family?

We understand why families hesitate to move a loved one into assisted living. The idea of keeping them at home—or even bringing them into your own home—feels like the most loving, responsible choice. But the reality is often very different from the ideal.

Caring for someone you love is one of the hardest things you can take on—especially when trying to balance work, family, and personal well-being. What begins with the best intentions can quickly turn into overwhelming responsibility, emotional exhaustion, and relationship strain.

The Hidden Challenges of Moving Your Loved One Into Your Home

It might seem like moving your loved one into your home is the most compassionate option—but caregiving at home can come at a great personal cost:

  • Emotional and Physical Exhaustion: Being a caregiver isn’t just physically demanding—it’s emotionally draining. The constant worry, the never-ending list of responsibilities, and the fear of making mistakes can wear down even the strongest person.
  • Strained Family Relationships: When a loved one moves in, it changes the dynamic of your home. It can put immense pressure on your marriage, disrupt family routines, and leave little room for quality time with your children or partner.
  • You Become the Caregiver, Not the Family Member: Instead of being the daughter, son, or spouse offering love and companionship, you become the nurse, the scheduler, the cleaner—the person who carries the full weight of care. The precious moments of simply being there for your loved one often get lost in the daily grind of caregiving duties.

The Risks of Staying at Home Alone

Staying in their own home might feel familiar for your loved one, but as their needs grow, so do the risks:

  • Increased Danger of Falls and Accidents: Homes aren’t designed with aging in mind. Falls can lead to devastating injuries, and without 24/7 supervision, help might not arrive in time.
  • Isolation and Loneliness: Staying home alone can lead to feelings of isolation, depression, and cognitive decline. Even with family visits, it’s not the same as having daily social interaction and companionship.
  • Missed Medical Needs: It’s easy to overlook changes in health when someone is living alone. Missed medications, undetected health issues, and lack of professional oversight can quickly lead to emergencies.
  • Inconsistent Care: No matter how dedicated you are, it’s nearly impossible to provide round-the-clock support at home. Life’s demands—work, family responsibilities, and personal health—make it difficult to provide the level of care your loved one needs.

Why Audubon Care Homes Is the Better Choice

At Audubon Care Homes, we offer what no home setting—whether their own or yours—can provide:

  • Professional, Compassionate 24/7 Care: Your loved one will always have someone there to help, whether it’s managing medications, providing mobility assistance, or simply offering a comforting presence.
  • A Safe, Home-Like Environment: Our residences are designed for safety, comfort, and accessibility—everything a typical home lacks when it comes to senior care.
  • Personalized Attention: With one of the highest caregiver-to-resident ratios in the country, your loved one will receive personalized, attentive care that evolves with their needs.
  • Emotional and Social Well-Being: Daily activities, meaningful connections, and a sense of belonging help residents stay engaged and joyful—something that’s hard to achieve at home.
  • You Get to Be Family Again: When your loved one moves into Audubon Care Homes, you can go back to simply being there for them—sharing stories, laughing, and making memories—without the overwhelming stress of caregiving.

Keeping your loved one at home—or moving them into yours—might feel like the right thing to do, but it can quickly lead to burnout, strained relationships, and risks to their health and safety. Choosing Audubon Care Homes isn’t about letting go—it’s about ensuring they receive the care they truly need while allowing you to cherish every moment you have together.

Because sometimes, the most loving choice you can make is the one that gives your loved one the best possible care—and gives you the space to just be family again.

What types of care needs can you accommodate?

We know how heavy this question can feel—especially as a daughter trying to make the best decision for someone you love. Watching your parent’s needs change is never easy, and it’s natural to wonder if you’ll be able to find the right level of care to keep them safe, comfortable, and living with dignity. At Audubon Care Homes, we’re here to ease those worries and support both you and your loved one every step of the way.

Our homes are designed for seniors who need a little extra help with daily life, as well as those with more advanced care needs. We provide compassionate, personalized support tailored to your loved one’s specific situation—always with the goal of making them feel respected, understood, and truly at home.

Here’s how we support a variety of care needs:

  • Assistance with Daily Living: We help with the basics that can become more challenging over time—bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, and personal hygiene. Our caregivers provide this support with patience and kindness, preserving your loved one’s dignity at every step.

  • Medication Management: Keeping up with medications can be overwhelming for seniors and their families. Our med pass nurse ensures that your loved one receives their medications on time and exactly as prescribed, giving you peace of mind that nothing is overlooked.

  • Mobility Support: Whether your parent needs help moving around the home, transferring from bed to chair, or using a walker or wheelchair, we’re there to provide gentle, respectful assistance while encouraging as much independence as possible.

  • Memory Care Support: For residents facing memory challenges, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, we offer specialized care designed to meet their unique needs. Our compassionate team creates a structured, calming environment to help reduce anxiety and confusion while encouraging meaningful engagement.

  • Health Monitoring: With regular visits from doctors and access to on-call nurses 24/7, we’re equipped to monitor ongoing health conditions and address any concerns quickly. We also collaborate with outside healthcare providers to ensure that all aspects of your loved one’s health are managed seamlessly.

  • Emotional and Social Support: We know that well-being isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, too. Our residents are part of a close-knit community where they can form friendships, participate in enriching activities, and feel a true sense of belonging.

At Audubon Care Homes, we believe that everyone deserves to age with dignity, comfort, and love—no matter where they are in their journey. You don’t have to navigate this alone; we’re here to offer the support your loved one needs and the peace of mind you deserve.

Do you only hire Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs)?

Yes, at Audubon Care Homes, we exclusively hire Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). Unlike many assisted living facilities that employ untrained caregivers with little to no formal healthcare experience, we believe that professional training and certification are essential to providing the highest standard of care. We also pay 30% higher than other assisted living communities in the New Orleans metro area.

CNAs undergo rigorous training, including coursework in patient safety, infection control, mobility assistance, and personal care. This ensures that every caregiver in our homes is equipped to handle complex needs, recognize early signs of health issues, and provide residents with the professional, compassionate support they deserve.

In addition to hiring only CNAs, we also offer the highest caregiver pay in the city. This commitment attracts and retains top talent, reducing staff turnover and ensuring consistent, high-quality care for our residents. Families can feel confident knowing their loved ones are in the hands of skilled professionals who are dedicated to their well-being.

Is It More Affordable Than Staying at Home?

The cost of providing around the clock care for someone in-home can cost $20,000+ per month. Many families initially believe that keeping their loved one at home is the most affordable option—but the truth is, costs can add up quickly when factoring in home modifications, in-home caregiving, medical equipment, and the emotional toll of providing care on your own. With rising homeowners insurance, flood insurance, property taxes, groceries, and home repairs, it is actually much cheaper to move your loved one into one of our communites. And beyond the financial strain, the hidden cost of staying home is the increased risk of isolation, falls, medication errors, and declining health.

With Audubon Care Homes, your loved one receives comprehensive, around-the-clock care in a safe, nurturing environment—something that’s hard to replicate at home, no matter how much support you provide.

How Much Does It Actually Cost?

Our current rates can be found on our Pricing page. We believe in offering clear, straightforward pricing with no hidden fees, and we’re here to walk you through every detail so you feel confident and informed. There are never any additional charges, add-on services, or fees. Ever.

When families search for the best assisted living near me and want the highest standard of care, they choose Audubon Care Homes every time. We offer more than just a place to live—we provide peace of mind, personalized care, and a home where your loved one can truly thrive. If you’re ready to learn more about pricing and what’s included, we’re here to answer all your questions and guide you through the process.

What makes Audubon Care Homes different from other assisted living homes?

When it comes to finding the right home for a loved one, the decision isn’t just about checking off a list of services—it’s about finding a place that feels right. A place where your loved one will feel truly seen, valued, and cared for as an individual. At Audubon Care Homes, that’s exactly what we offer—a level of care and attention that goes far beyond the ordinary.

Here’s what truly sets us apart from other assisted living homes in Metairie:

    • The Highest Standard of Personalized Care: We offer one of the highest caregiver-to-resident ratios in the entire country. This means your loved one receives personalized attention from caregivers who take the time to truly know them—their routines, preferences, and what brings them joy. Every moment of care is given with patience, compassion, and respect for their dignity.

    • A Real Home, Not Just a Place to Stay: Our residences are warm, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed to feel just like home. Unlike larger, more clinical facilities, we create an intimate, cozy environment where residents feel comfortable, secure, and part of a close-knit community.

    • Genuine Connections That Matter: Smaller homes allow for stronger relationships. Here, your loved one will be surrounded by familiar faces—caregivers who genuinely care, and fellow residents who feel like family. This sense of belonging makes a real difference in their overall happiness and emotional well-being.

    • Tailored Support for Every Stage of Aging: From assistance with daily living to specialized memory care, our team adapts to meet your loved one’s evolving needs. We work with you to create a personalized care plan, ensuring they always receive the right level of support, delivered with compassion and understanding.

    • Peace of Mind for Families: We know how much it means to trust someone with the care of someone you love. At Audubon Care Homes, we keep you informed, involved, and reassured every step of the way. You’ll never be left wondering if your loved one is okay—you’ll know they’re receiving the highest standard of care in a safe, nurturing environment.

At the heart of everything we do is a simple belief: every person deserves to age with dignity, comfort, and love. If you’re looking for more than just a care facility—if you’re looking for a true home where your loved one will be cherished and supported—Audubon Care Homes is here for you.

Why should I choose Audubon Care Homes over a large assisted living facility?

When it comes to finding the right place for your loved one, we know you’re not just looking for a place that meets their needs—you’re looking for a home where they’ll feel safe, loved, and genuinely cared for. That’s something big, institutional facilities simply can’t offer. At Audubon Care Homes, we provide a level of personalized care, comfort, and connection that larger facilities just can’t match.

Here’s why so many families choose us over the big-box alternatives:

  • A True Home, Not a Facility: Large assisted living centers can feel cold, clinical, and overwhelming. Our homes are exactly that—homes. They’re warm, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed to feel familiar and welcoming, with cozy common spaces, peaceful outdoor areas, and private rooms where your loved one can truly relax and feel at ease.

  • Unmatched Personalized Care: Big facilities often struggle with high resident numbers and limited staff, meaning your loved one might not get the attention they deserve. At Audubon Care Homes, we’re proud to have one of the highest caregiver-to-resident ratios in the entire country. This means more one-on-one time, faster responses to needs, and caregivers who truly get to know your loved one—their routines, preferences, and even the little things that make them smile.

What is the admissions process like?

We understand that making the move to assisted living is not just a big decision—it’s an emotional one. You’re not just choosing a care home; you’re choosing a new chapter for someone you love deeply. At Audubon Care Homes, we’re here to walk with you every step of the way, making the transition as smooth, supportive, and stress-free as possible.

Learn more about our simple move-in process on our 'How It Works' page.

We know that the decision to move away from home often comes with feelings of guilt, fear, and uncertainty. Our goal is to help ease those feelings by offering clarity, compassion, and the reassurance that your loved one will be surrounded by people who genuinely care for them like family.

Here’s what you can expect from our admissions process:

1. Initial Conversation: Listening to Your Needs

The first step is simply a conversation. We’ll take the time to get to know your family, understand your loved one’s needs, and answer any questions you might have. We want to hear about your concerns, their daily routines, health challenges, and what truly matters to you. This is a chance for you to get to know us, too—and see if Audubon Care Homes feels like the right fit.

2. Tour Our Homes

We invite you to visit one of our residences in Metairie and experience the warm, welcoming environment firsthand. You’ll see how different our homes are from large, institutional facilities—cozy, intimate, and designed to feel like a true home. This visit will give you peace of mind and help your loved one start to feel more comfortable with the idea of transitioning.

3. Personalized Assessment

Next, we conduct a personalized assessment to determine the level of care your loved one will need. This allows us to create a customized care plan tailored specifically to their physical, emotional, and social needs. Every person is unique, and we take the time to ensure that every detail reflects their individual requirements and preferences.

4. Seemless Move-In Support

Once you’ve made the decision, we’ll guide you through every detail of the move-in process. We’ll help with logistics, from paperwork to coordinating the move itself. We also encourage families to bring personal items, photos, and familiar belongings to help create a comforting, home-like space for your loved one.

5. The 90-Day Transitional Period

We understand that the first 90 days can be an emotional adjustment—for both your loved one and your family. During this time, we focus on helping your loved one settle into their new routine, get to know our caregivers, and build connections with other residents. It’s normal for the early days to feel challenging, but with time and support, things begin to feel familiar, comfortable, and, most importantly, right.

6. Ongoing Communication and Support

You won’t be left in the dark after move-in day. We stay in close contact with you, providing regular updates on your loved one’s well-being and making sure you’re involved in every step of their care journey.

From your very first call to those important first few months, we’re here to support you and your family with compassion, patience, and understanding. Choosing Audubon Care Homes means giving your loved one not just a place to live—but a place to belong, feel cared for, and truly thrive.

What if my loved one is on hospice? Can they still live at Audubon Care Homes?

Yes, we absolutely accept residents who are on hospice. Many families assume that hospice care requires a hospital or nursing home setting, but in reality, hospice services can be provided anywhere—including in the comfort of our homes.

At Audubon Care Homes, we work closely with hospice providers to ensure that your loved one receives the specialized care they need while continuing to benefit from our high staff-to-resident ratio, warm environment, and personalized attention. Our Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are experienced in supporting residents receiving hospice care, helping to ensure comfort, dignity, and quality of life in their final stages.

Choosing Audubon Care Homes for hospice care allows your loved one to remain in a peaceful, home-like setting surrounded by compassionate caregivers and family, rather than a sterile, institutional environment.

We recommend working with Interim Hospice.

Can residents bring personal belongings or furniture?

Absolutely. At Audubon Care Homes, we believe that feeling truly at home means surrounding yourself with the things you love—those familiar pieces that hold memories, offer comfort, and bring a sense of belonging. Moving into assisted living can be a difficult transition, and bringing personal belongings can make all the difference in helping your loved one feel safe, settled, and truly at ease.

We encourage residents to bring items that reflect their personality, history, and what makes them feel most comfortable. After all, this isn’t just a new place to live—it’s their home.

Creating a Space That Feels Like Home

When your loved one moves into Audubon Care Homes, we invite them to make their space their own by bringing:

  • Favorite Furniture Pieces: Whether it’s a cherished recliner, a bedside table, or a special chair, familiar furniture can make their room feel warm and comforting. We’re happy to accommodate personal furniture that fits safely within the space.
  • Meaningful Decor: Framed photos of family and friends, artwork, or treasured keepsakes can help create an environment that feels uniquely theirs.
  • Comfort Items: Personal bedding, cozy blankets, favorite pillows, or a well-loved quilt can make their new living space feel more familiar and soothing.
  • Books, Hobbies, and Entertainment: We encourage residents to bring books, puzzles, craft supplies, or anything that brings them joy and supports their hobbies and interests.

Making the Transition Easier with Familiar Comforts

We understand how important it is for your loved one to feel comfortable, especially during the initial transition period. Having familiar belongings close by can ease anxiety, help build a sense of security, and create a peaceful environment that feels like home from the very beginning.

Safety and Comfort Come First

While we encourage personalization, we also ensure that each living space remains safe and accessible. Our team will work with you to help arrange furniture and belongings in a way that maintains a safe and comfortable environment—especially for residents who need assistance with mobility.

We’re Here to Help Make It Feel Like Home

Our team is always available to help you and your loved one settle in and arrange their space in a way that feels just right. We know that it’s the little things—the familiar photos, the favorite chair, the comforting blanket—that make a house feel like home.

At Audubon Care Homes, we’re committed to creating not just a place to live but a space where your loved one can feel surrounded by warmth, familiarity, and love.

What does the first 90 days look like after my loved one moves in?

We understand that moving a loved one into assisted living is a big change—for both you and them. No matter how warm and welcoming the environment is, adjusting to a new home, new routines, and new faces can be challenging. That’s why we recognize the first 90 days as a transitional period—a time of adjustment, understanding, and settling in.

In most cases, the hardest part is the beginning. The first 30 days can feel overwhelming for everyone involved. Your loved one is getting used to a new space, unfamiliar caregivers, and a daily routine that may feel different from what they’re used to. And for you, it’s an emotional time of letting go and trusting someone else with their care. We want you to know—it’s okay if things feel rocky at first. That’s completely natural.

Here’s what to expect during those first 90 days:

  • The First 30 Days: Settling In
This is often the toughest part of the transition. Your loved one will be adjusting to their new surroundings, meeting caregivers, and learning new routines. Our team will work closely with them—and you—to help ease this process. We take the time to get to know your loved one personally, learning their preferences, routines, and what makes them feel comfortable and secure.

  • Days 30-60: Building Comfort and Connection
As your loved one begins to settle in, they’ll start forming meaningful relationships with caregivers and fellow residents. Their daily routine will begin to feel familiar, and their sense of comfort and security will grow. You’ll likely notice fewer moments of uncertainty and more signs of contentment and ease.

  • Days 60-90: Feeling at Home
By this stage, most residents feel a sense of belonging. They’ve established routines, built friendships, and begun to truly feel at home. We continue to adjust care as needed, ensuring that their physical, emotional, and social needs are met with compassion and personalized attention.

Throughout this entire transitional period, we stay in close communication with you, providing updates and working together to make the transition as smooth as possible.

It’s normal for the first few weeks to feel challenging, but with time, patience, and our dedicated support, things get better—often much sooner than expected. By the end of those first 90 days, your loved one will not just be adjusting—they’ll be thriving in a home filled with care, comfort, and community.

Do you prevent falls?

At Audubon Care Homes, we believe in providing a safe and supportive environment while respecting each resident's freedom and independence. Like any residential home, our residents are free to move about as they wish, with no physical restraints or medications used to restrict movement.

We understand that seniors may face a higher risk of falls when standing, walking, or moving around, and our compassionate caregivers are always happy to offer assistance when available. However, while we are here to help, our team cannot monitor every movement at all times.

Our priority is to create a comfortable, home-like setting where residents can enjoy their independence with the reassurance of support when needed. If you have any concerns about mobility and safety, we are happy to discuss personalized care solutions that may be beneficial.

What does a typical day look like for a resident at Audubon Care Homes?

When imagining your loved one in assisted living, it’s natural to wonder what their daily life will look like. Will they feel comfortable? Will they be engaged? Will they find joy in the little moments? At Audubon Care Homes, we’ve designed every part of our residents’ day to create a sense of peace, routine, and belonging—because we believe that a fulfilling life is made up of meaningful, everyday moments. We operate each day on a schedule that was intentionally designed by Michelle & Scott Lovitt, PharmD.

Our homes are built around comfort, connection, and personalized care. Each day is thoughtfully structured to provide a balance of support, engagement, and relaxation, all while respecting each resident’s independence and personal preferences.

A Glimpse Into Daily Life at Audubon Care Homes

  • Mornings Begin with Comfort and Routine:
The day starts with gentle, personalized assistance to help residents wake up feeling refreshed and supported. Whether it’s help with dressing, grooming, or simply enjoying a slow, peaceful morning, our caregivers are there to offer compassionate support. A nutritious, home-cooked breakfast follows, served in a cozy dining space where residents can enjoy a warm, communal atmosphere. If it is your loved one's shower day, they will receive a bath, per their care plan.

  • Mid-Morning Activities to Engage the Mind and Body:
We offer a variety of engaging activities tailored to each resident’s abilities and interests. Whether it’s gentle exercise, memory games, music therapy, or creative arts and crafts, every activity is designed to support mental stimulation, physical health, and emotional well-being.

  • A Relaxing, Nutritious Lunch:
Our residents enjoy freshly prepared, home-cooked meals made with love and care. We accommodate special dietary needs while making sure every meal feels nourishing and enjoyable—because food should bring both comfort and joy.

  • Afternoons Filled with Connection and Relaxation:
After lunch, residents can enjoy quiet time to rest, read, or engage in light conversation. For those seeking connection, we offer group activities such as puzzles, board games, or gardening in our peaceful outdoor spaces. Our therapists conduct sessions on a regular schedule at each location. One day it could be the History of Mardi Gras, the next day it could be a Tour of Paris. Our therapists are always coming up with new topics to bring to our communities. There are also opportunities for one-on-one companionship, allowing residents to form meaningful relationships with caregivers and fellow residents.

  • Evening Routines That Bring Peace and Comfort:
As the day winds down, residents enjoy a comforting dinner followed by quiet, relaxing activities such as movie nights, music, or storytelling. Evening routines are calm and familiar, designed to promote a sense of safety and relaxation before bedtime.

  • 24/7 Support When It’s Needed Most:
Throughout the day and night, our caregivers are always available to assist with anything your loved one may need. Whether it’s medication management, mobility support, or simply a listening ear, we’re here to provide compassionate care at every moment.

More Than Just a Schedule—It’s a Sense of Home

What truly sets a day at Audubon Care Homes apart isn’t just the routine—it’s the warmth, dignity, and genuine human connection woven into every moment. Every interaction, meal, and activity is designed to make residents feel comfortable, supported, and part of a loving community.

Our goal is simple: to help your loved one feel safe, cared for, and at home—every single day.

How do you ensure the safety and well-being of your residents?

We understand how difficult it is to entrust someone else with the care of your loved one. As a daughter or son, you want to know that your parent is not just safe but truly cared for—seen, heard, and valued every single day. At Audubon Care Homes, we take that responsibility to heart.

Our approach to safety and well-being is built on compassion, attentiveness, and a deep understanding of what it means to care for someone’s family. Here’s how we provide peace of mind:

  • More Personalized Attention: With one of the highest caregiver-to-resident ratios in the country, we’re able to give your loved one the time and attention they deserve. This means quicker responses when they need help, more meaningful interactions, and the comfort of truly being known by our staff.

  • 24/7 Care and Supervision: Your loved one will never be alone when they need help. Our dedicated caregivers are available around the clock to provide support with daily activities, medication reminders, or simply a reassuring presence during difficult moments.

  • Medical Support You Can Rely On: We partner with trusted healthcare professionals to offer on-site medical services. This includes regular visits from doctors and specialized therapists, along with a nurse available by phone 24 hours a day for any urgent concerns.

  • A Safe, Comfortable Home Environment: Our homes are designed to feel like exactly that—a home. With thoughtfully arranged spaces, secure surroundings, and peaceful outdoor areas, your loved one can enjoy both comfort and safety without feeling restricted or overwhelmed.

  • Emergency Preparedness: We’re ready for the unexpected. Each of our homes is equipped with a backup whole-home generator, ensuring that even during a power outage, your loved one remains safe, comfortable, and cared for.

  • Emotional Well-being Matters, Too: We believe true well-being extends beyond physical safety. From engaging activities and social events to quiet moments of connection, we foster an environment where your loved one feels emotionally supported and part of a community.

We can’t promise that every moment will be perfect—no care setting can. But what we can promise is that we will treat your loved one with the same respect, dignity, and compassion that we would want for our own family. You won’t have to wonder if they’re okay—you’ll know they’re in caring, capable hands.

How do you support the emotional well-being and social life of your residents?

Caring for your loved one isn’t just about meeting physical needs—it’s about nurturing the heart, mind, and spirit. At Audubon Care Homes, we believe that true well-being comes from feeling connected, valued, and part of a community. That’s why we go beyond basic care to create an environment where your loved one can feel joy, purpose, and belonging every single day.

Here’s how we support the emotional and social well-being of our residents:

  • A True Sense of Belonging: In our small, intimate homes, your loved one isn’t just another resident—they’re part of a close-knit family. Our caregivers take the time to build genuine relationships, getting to know each resident’s personality, preferences, and life story. This familiarity creates a deep sense of comfort, trust, and emotional security.

  • Engaging Activities Designed for Joy and Purpose: We offer a variety of meaningful activities designed to stimulate the mind, encourage creativity, and promote connection. From arts and crafts to music therapy, group games, and exercise classes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Each activity is tailored to the interests and abilities of our residents, ensuring they feel included and empowered.

  • Companionship and Connection: Loneliness can be one of the most challenging aspects of aging—but not here. Our smaller setting encourages genuine friendships among residents and staff. Whether it’s sharing a meal, enjoying a quiet conversation, or participating in group activities, every day offers opportunities for connection and companionship.

  • Emotional Support from Compassionate Caregivers: Our caregivers aren’t just there to assist with daily tasks—they’re there to listen, offer comfort, and be a steady source of emotional support. We take the time to notice when something feels off and offer reassurance during tough moments.

  • Pet Therapy for Added Comfort and Joy: Animals can bring a unique sense of peace and happiness. We offer pet therapy opportunities, which can help reduce stress, encourage social interaction, and provide moments of pure joy for our residents.

  • Celebrating Life’s Moments—Big and Small: We love to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and personal milestones, making sure each resident feels special and appreciated. These celebrations create joyful memories and foster a deep sense of community.

At Audubon Care Homes, we understand that emotional well-being is just as important as physical health. Our mission is to create a space where your loved one can thrive—surrounded by compassion, meaningful connections, and a sense of purpose that brings joy to every day. You’ll have peace of mind knowing they’re not just being cared for—they’re living life with dignity, love, and belonging.

Can residents continue seeing their own doctors and receiving outside care?

Absolutely. We understand that, as a loved one, one of your biggest concerns is making sure your loved one continues to receive the medical care they’re comfortable with—especially from doctors they know and trust. At Audubon Care Homes, we believe that familiar routines and trusted relationships are essential to feeling safe and supported.

Your loved one’s existing healthcare team doesn’t just remain part of their care—they’re welcomed as an important part of the journey. Whether it’s regular appointments with their primary care physician, specialist visits, or ongoing therapy, we’ll help coordinate everything to ensure your loved one’s care remains consistent and seamless.

Here’s how we support this:

  • Open Access to Outside Providers: If your loved one has a doctor they’ve been seeing for years, they can continue that relationship without interruption. We’ll gladly help coordinate and assist to make those visits as smooth as possible.

  • Collaborative Care Approach: Our team works alongside your loved one’s outside healthcare providers to ensure there’s clear communication and consistency in their treatment plan. You’ll never have to worry about gaps in care—everyone stays on the same page.

  • On-Site Medical Support: While outside care continues, we also offer on-site medical services to make life a little easier. This includes regular visits from doctors, therapists, podiatrists, dentists, and other specialists. And with a nurse and pharmacist available by phone 24/7, there’s always someone ready to help if an issue arises between appointments.

  • Respect for Personal Preferences: We recognize that every individual’s healthcare journey is unique. Whether your loved one prefers a particular pharmacy, physical therapist, or physician, we’ll work with you to honor those preferences as much as possible.

Our goal is simple: to make sure your loved one receives the best care—whether that’s from trusted providers they’ve known for years or from our compassionate team here at Audubon Care Homes. You can rest easier knowing that your parent’s health will never be compromised, and their care will always feel familiar, respectful, and thoughtfully coordinated.

What meals and dietary options do you provide?

At Audubon Care Homes, we believe that meals should nourish both the body and the soul. Food is more than just sustenance—it’s comfort, tradition, and a meaningful part of daily life. We understand how important it is for your loved one to enjoy meals that are not only healthy but also delicious, familiar, and made with genuine care.

Our approach to dining focuses on creating a warm, home-like experience where residents can gather, connect, and enjoy thoughtfully prepared meals that cater to their personal tastes and dietary needs.

Home-Cooked Meals, Made with Love

All of our meals are prepared fresh in-house, just like you would at home. We prioritize using wholesome ingredients to create nourishing, flavorful dishes that feel comforting and familiar. Our kitchens are filled with the aromas of home-cooked favorites, served in a cozy dining space that encourages connection and conversation. We operate on a rotating menu designed by a nutritionist and local chef specifically for seniors.

Personalized Dietary Options to Meet Every Need

We recognize that every resident has unique dietary requirements and preferences. Our care team works closely with residents, families, and healthcare providers to ensure that every meal meets nutritional needs while still being enjoyable.

Here’s how we cater to individual dietary needs:

  • Customized Meal Plans: We create personalized menus based on each resident’s health requirements, medical conditions, and food preferences. Whether your loved one needs a low-sodium, diabetic-friendly, or heart-healthy diet, we ensure every meal aligns with their needs. The reality is, most of our residents simply want to enjoy a good meal so the majority of the food we prepare is catered more toward taste than it is toward a particular type of diet. However, we can accomdate any dietary requests.
  • Texture-Modified Diets: For residents who have difficulty chewing or swallowing, we provide texture-modified meals—soft, pureed, or thickened foods—while ensuring that flavor and nutrition are never compromised.
  • Accommodating Allergies and Intolerances: We take food allergies and sensitivities seriously, offering alternatives and adjustments to ensure safety and peace of mind.
  • Special Utensils: If your loved one requires the use of a specialized utensil, we can accomodate that.

A Dining Experience That Feels Like Home

  • Family-Style Dining: Meals are served in a warm, communal setting that encourages conversation, companionship, and a sense of belonging. We believe that sharing meals with others fosters emotional well-being and creates meaningful daily moments.
  • Flexible Meal Options: We understand that not everyone has the same appetite or routine. Residents can enjoy snacks and beverages throughout the day, and we always strive to accommodate individual preferences and mealtime routines.
  • Celebrating Special Moments: Food brings people together, and we love celebrating birthdays, holidays, and special occasions with festive meals and favorite treats that make our residents feel cherished and celebrated.

More Than Nutrition—It’s Comfort, Connection, and Joy

Dining at Audubon Care Homes is about more than just meeting nutritional needs—it’s about creating moments of comfort, joy, and connection. Every meal is prepared with care, served with warmth, and designed to make your loved one feel truly at home.

We’re dedicated to providing a dining experience that not only supports physical health but also brings happiness and a sense of community to every table.

Are there activities for residents?

Yes—at Audubon Care Homes, we believe that life should be filled with joy, purpose, and connection at every stage. Our approach to assisted living goes far beyond simply providing care; we create a vibrant, engaging environment where residents can thrive emotionally, mentally, and socially.

Staying active and socially connected isn’t just about passing the time—it’s about enhancing quality of life, fostering meaningful relationships, and helping residents feel like they are truly part of a loving community. Our carefully curated activities and events are designed to do just that.

Daily Activities That Engage the Mind, Body, and Spirit

We offer a variety of enriching activities that are thoughtfully planned to cater to the unique interests and abilities of our residents. Every activity is designed to encourage engagement, promote mental stimulation, and foster emotional well-being. Some of our regular offerings include:

  • Creative Arts and Crafts: Residents can express themselves through painting, drawing, or seasonal crafts—activities that inspire creativity and encourage social interaction.
  • Music Therapy: Music brings joy, triggers memories, and promotes relaxation. We offer live music sessions, sing-alongs, and interactive music therapy.
  • Brain-Boosting Games: Puzzles, trivia, memory games, and card games designed to stimulate cognitive function and provide fun, friendly competition.

Social Events and Special Gatherings

We also host regular events to bring residents together for joyful, community-centered experiences:

  • Holiday Celebrations: From festive meals to themed activities, we love celebrating holidays with residents and their families.
  • Birthday Celebrations: Every resident’s special day is honored with a celebration that makes them feel appreciated and loved.
  • Movie Nights: Classic films, recent releases, and resident favorites—paired with snacks and good company.
  • Themed Events: Seasonal parties, game nights, and special guest visits to create memorable moments for our residents.

Spiritual and Emotional Support Activities

We recognize that emotional and spiritual well-being is just as important as physical health. We offer:

  • Spiritual Services: Non-denominational services and spiritual support for those who wish to participate.
  • Pet Therapy: Visits from friendly animals offer comfort, companionship, and a sense of joy.
  • One-on-One Companionship: Our caregivers spend quality time with residents, offering personalized attention and meaningful conversation.

This is more than just a place to live—it’s a place to belong, grow, and continue making meaningful memories every day.

Do you offer spiritual support or accommodate religious preferences?

Yes, we recognize that spiritual well-being is an important part of overall health and happiness for many of our residents. At Audubon Care Homes, we are committed to supporting each resident’s individual faith and spiritual practices in a respectful and meaningful way.

We are proud to offer weekly communion services led by a dedicated church member who visits our homes to provide this sacred tradition for those who wish to participate. This offers residents a comforting connection to their faith and a sense of spiritual community, right in the comfort of their home.

Respecting All Religious Preferences

We understand that faith is deeply personal, and every individual’s spiritual journey is unique. While we regularly offer Christian communion services, we are more than happy to accommodate other religious preferences and practices. Our team is committed to helping residents observe their faith in ways that are meaningful to them, whether that means arranging for visits from spiritual leaders of other faiths, providing quiet spaces for prayer or meditation, or helping residents celebrate important religious holidays and traditions.

At Audubon Care Homes, we believe that supporting spiritual health is just as important as meeting physical and emotional needs. We’re here to ensure that your loved one feels respected, supported, and at peace—no matter their faith or spiritual practice.

How can family members stay involved in their loved one’s care?

We understand how important it is for families to remain connected and involved in their loved one’s care journey. Moving someone you love into assisted living doesn’t mean stepping back—it means shifting from the role of caregiver to becoming a loving source of support, presence, and companionship. At Audubon Care Homes, we value family involvement and encourage you to stay engaged in every way that feels meaningful to you.

Our goal is to create a partnership with families, ensuring that you always feel informed, involved, and welcomed as an essential part of your loved one’s life and care plan.

Ways You Can Stay Involved

  • Open Visitation: We encourage family visits as often as possible. Our warm, home-like environment is designed to make you feel welcome, whether you’re dropping by for a short visit or spending the day.

  • Regular Communication with Our Team: We maintain open lines of communication with families, providing regular updates about your loved one’s well-being, health, and daily life. If there’s ever anything you want to discuss, our team is always available to answer questions or address concerns.

  • Participation in Care Planning: You know your loved one best. That’s why we involve families in creating and adjusting personalized care plans. Your input is invaluable in ensuring that their needs, preferences, and routines are honored.

  • Join Special Events and Activities: We regularly host events, celebrations, and activities where families are invited to join in the fun. Whether it’s a holiday party, a birthday celebration, or a casual afternoon gathering, these moments offer opportunities to create meaningful memories together.

  • Shared Mealtimes: Family members are welcome to join their loved one for meals. Sharing a meal can be a comforting and familiar way to connect and spend quality time together.

  • Virtual Visits: For family members who live farther away, we can help coordinate video calls to ensure that distance never gets in the way of connection. We can coordinate FaceTime calls, Zoom calls, or any other form of video call. Just ask!

Your Role in Their Emotional Well-Being

Even though our dedicated team handles day-to-day caregiving, you are still your loved one’s greatest source of comfort and emotional support. Regular visits, phone calls, and letters can make a world of difference in helping your loved one feel connected and cherished.

At Audubon Care Homes, we believe that family isn’t just welcome—it’s essential. We’re here to ensure that your relationship with your loved one remains strong, meaningful, and filled with opportunities to share love, laughter, and memories together.

How do you communicate with families about resident well-being and updates?

We understand how important it is for you to stay informed about your loved one’s well-being—especially when they’re no longer living at home. At Audubon Care Homes, we believe in open, honest, and compassionate communication with families. You should never feel out of the loop when it comes to the care and happiness of someone you love.

Our team is dedicated to keeping you informed, involved, and reassured every step of the way. We treat every resident like family—and we treat their families with the same respect, transparency, and care.

How We Keep You Updated

  • Regular Check-Ins: Our care team provides routine updates on your loved one’s health, well-being, and daily activities. You’ll hear about the things that matter most—whether it’s changes in care needs, medical updates, or even just the small wins and joyful moments that happen throughout their day.

  • Immediate Notifications for Changes in Health: If there’s any change in your loved one’s health, behavior, or well-being, you’ll be informed right away. We believe you should never be caught off guard when it comes to their care.

  • Scheduled Care Plan Reviews: We regularly review your loved one’s personalized care plan and invite you to be part of those discussions. This ensures that any changes in their needs, routines, or preferences are addressed promptly and thoughtfully. Care plans are reviewed every 90 days at minimum.

  • Open Communication with Our Team: Our caregivers, nurses, and leadership team are always available to answer questions, address concerns, or simply provide reassurance. You can reach out anytime—you’ll always have a direct line to those caring for your loved one.

  • Family Meetings: We offer scheduled family meetings where you can speak directly with our care team about your loved one’s progress, discuss any concerns, and collaborate on decisions about their care. We are happy to meet with families one-on-one to address any concerns. There is no concern too small, no detail too trivial.

  • Updates on Activities and Social Engagement: We’ll share information about your loved one’s participation in daily activities, special events, and social interactions. Knowing they’re engaged and connected can offer peace of mind that they’re truly thriving in their new home.

Staying Connected Emotionally

Beyond formal updates, we also encourage regular emotional connections between you and your loved one. Whether it’s through phone calls, video chats, or in-person visits, we’re here to help facilitate meaningful interactions that strengthen your bond and bring comfort to both of you.

At Audubon Care Homes, we know how hard it is to let go of daily caregiving responsibilities—but that doesn’t mean you should ever feel distant from your loved one’s journey. Our commitment to clear, compassionate communication ensures you’ll always feel connected, informed, and confident in the care your loved one is receiving.

L

Do you work with placement agencies?

Yes, we do work with placement agencies, and we welcome referrals from all sources. However, based on our professional experience, we believe it’s important for families to be fully informed about how these agencies operate and the value they truly provide.

Placement agencies can seem helpful at first—they often promise to simplify the search for assisted living by offering quick recommendations. However, what many families don’t realize is that these agencies typically receive commissions from the facilities they refer to, which can influence their recommendations. This means their advice might not always be focused on what’s genuinely best for your loved one.

At Audubon Care Homes, we believe that finding the right care for someone you love should be based on trust, transparency, and genuine connection—not financial incentives. Our team is here to answer your questions directly, offer honest guidance, and help you determine if our home is truly the best fit for your family’s needs. We want to be a resource for families, even if one of our locations is not a good fit for your loved one.

We encourage families to visit our homes in person, speak with our dedicated team, the owners, and experience the care and warmth we provide firsthand. Your decision should be based on what feels right for your loved one—not what benefits a third party.

If you have any questions or need help navigating the process, we’re here to support you every step of the way—no middleman necessary.

We strongly recommend not working with Senior Care Authority. Our experience with this company has not been ideal.

If another pandemic like COVID-19 happens, will my loved one be safer in a small residential care home like Audubon Care Homes compared to a large facility?

Absolutely. During COVID-19, large nursing homes and big-box facilities became death traps—outbreaks spread like wildfire, wiping out entire wings of residents. In some cases, dozens of seniors died within days because the virus moved too fast to contain. Staff shortages, shared dining halls, rotating caregivers, and a revolving door of visitors turned these places into breeding grounds for infection.

In contrast, small residential care homes like Audubon Care Homes were dramatically safer. Fewer residents, higher staff-to-resident ratios, and a controlled environment meant less exposure and better infection control. Studies showed that smaller facilities had significantly lower infection and death rates because they could quickly lock down, maintain strict hygiene, and keep residents separated from outside exposure.

If another pandemic strikes, would you rather have your loved one in a big-box facility where infections spread uncontrollably—or in a tight-knit, carefully managed home with personalized care and immediate response? When it comes to safety, smaller is better, and Audubon Care Homes is the best choice to protect your loved one.
